Elite Eight Combine Events

Event 1.  Bench Press 185 / 135

Athletes compete to produce the most repetitions on the bench press. The standard weight for this competition is 185 lbs. However, for competitors which are not quite ready to compete with that weight, the alternative to lift 135 lbs is available. It is important to note that a single rep of 185 lbs is valued higher than any number of reps at 135 lbs.  In order for a rep to "count", the contestant's arms must lock out the weight.

Event 2.  Vertical Jump

The second combine event is the vertical jump. Using a digital jump-board, we test the ability of each athlete to jump vertically. Each athlete is permitted two attempts. Each attempt is measured in tenths of inches. The best attempt is for each athlete is considered for scoring.

Athletes must not bend their knees so as to tuck while in the air. For best results, arm swing and reach is recommended. Contestants must land the jump with both feet on the jump board.

Event 3. Timed Pro Shuttle Run

The third combine event tests an athlete's lateral quickness and explosion in short areas.  Beginning in a 3 point stance facing the timer, the athlete explodes to his right racing to touch the line 5 yards away, then races in the opposite direction to touch the line 10 yards away, and finally sprints through the finish line in the opposite direction 5 yards away.

Event 4. Timed 40 yd.

Many consider the 40 yd dash to be the premiere combine event. Athletes demonstrate explosion and speed from a static start in this event. From a sprinter's stance, contestants go on their ready, and the timer begins on first movement. A good start and proper running technique are necessary for an athlete to maximize their potential in this contest.
